This adaptive reuse project transformed a former United Church hall into a vibrant community marketplace, giving new purpose to a building that had long been an important part of the community’s infrastructure while creating opportunities for local businesses.
The renovation involved reimagining the large open hall into six individual commercial spaces, each designed to accommodate a unique tenant while maintaining a cohesive overall aesthetic. Today, the building is home to a coffee shop, a fully equipped commercial kitchen, a gift store, a thrift store, a massage therapy clinic, and an aesthetics business.
A key feature of the project was the creation of an indoor “old town” streetscape. The individual storefronts were designed to resemble a traditional main street, complete with distinctive façades, architectural details, and pedestrian-friendly open spaces. This unique concept transformed what was once a single large gathering space into a marketplace that encourages visitors to explore each business while enjoying the charm of a small-town shopping district.
In addition to constructing the individual retail and service spaces, the renovation included significant upgrades to the building’s infrastructure, accessibility, lighting, mechanical systems, and finishes to meet modern commercial standards while preserving the building’s strong connection to the community.
The completed project successfully revitalized a well-known community landmark, providing a permanent home for six local businesses and creating a welcoming destination that supports entrepreneurship, encourages local shopping, and serves as a gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
